When I was a child, all I could think about was writing. I'd think about what it would mean to be a voice to another, in the way that so many voices had touched my life through the books I had read, spiriting me along.
My first few novels (which were terrible in every way) didn't survive the great computer crash of '97 and I found it impossible to start a new page, moving onto other ventures such as music and performance art. I think I was looking for some 'instant response' from the world, the short-term validation that writing couldn't provide.
But somehow, only just last year, I felt the clawing need to be somewhere else. Anywhere else. Maybe even someone else, who knows. And just like that, right when I needed it and over a decade later, this- world, opened itself up to me once again. I could see further than ever before, every tree, every mountain, it all somehow belonged to me. All of those deep fears seemed to melt away, and it didn't matter anymore if I was 'good enough' to be a writer, I was simply overwhelmed with the need to share with others what I had seen and felt in this beautiful and dangerous place.
So whether I'm any good at storytelling suddenly paled in comparison with how much i adored writing, and one hundred thousand words and countless edits later, I'm almost finished.
Soon, I'll be preparing this manuscript for my first ever, real-life submission, (which is probably fifteen years overdue) and preparing for my first stack of rejection letters, which I expect is par for the course.

So this is my very long and somewhat self-indulgent way of saying thank you for this fantastic site. Solid advice from a proven professional is key when taking that next step, saves me from falling at the finish line.
